What to Do If Your Budgie Bites You During Play Time
Budgies will often bite out of fear of their captors in the beginning. If they do bite, the best thing to do is "not react to it or make a big deal out of it.'" Once they know their bites will not affect you they will usually stop.
On occasions, when budgies start to bond, some will bite hands or your lips unexpectedly during playing. This is not to be confused with biting when they are afraid of being handled or when they don't want to be picked up. The fear bite is usually harder than the playful one. Just keep them far enough away from your face, or cover your mouth with your hand and that should prevent them from nipping tender spots on your face. If they get a little nip in now and then, chalk it up to experience. I have never heard of a budgie causing much more than a pinch and they can seldom draw blood like the larger parrots. Like a puppy or kitten, it is their playful nature to do so. If it continues to bite hard after a year or so, then you can start punishing it by putting it in the cage for a limited time and telling it that it is a bad budgie. It should eventually get the hint and stop doing it after a while.
